Thank you for watching my Vblog #2, I decide to do option 1 which is an interview with an English learner. She is also a Monolingual teacher at Fort Bend ISD, and been working at Fort Bend ISD for 26 years.
Her experience learning English was actually harder than she expected, she moved here to the United States as an adult. I can only imagine how difficult that was for her to adjust to a new culture and language. She did take English classes as soon as she moved here, and that's how she got into the school system as a paraprofessional. As time went by, she was able to get into school to become a teacher and she finally did. Now she's working as a monolingual teacher and working for a bilingual certification.
She shared how newcomers come to her classroom as a transitional place while they get tested, and placed where they belong. Most students spend about a month and a half up to 2 months in her classroom, and students don't want to leave the class just because they find that comfort within her and the rest of the students. She also expressed how she makes the students feel like they belong no matter their language and where they come from. She helps the understand that they came here with a purpose and not let others diminish their identity just because they are learning a new language and a whole new culture. “The home language is viewed as a resource. It is used for instructional purposes and further developed even after ELLs have attained sufficient proficiency in English to handle English-medium instruction.” (Wright, 2019 P. 105). Most students that have gone through her classroom have shown tremendous changes since they first arrived in the country, all because she has shown them love and a place where they belong.
“The video enables the student to see the additional visual cues conveying meaning together with the oral language” (Wright, 2019, p. 176). She has also shared how she models and provides many resources she can in order to help them succeed in their learning. She has shared that many of her students, including her, benefit from a lot of modeling and detailed instructions just because some are still in the process of learning English.
